**Abstract:** The aim of this paper is to analyze the regional determinants of biogas production units’ creation in French metropolitan NUTS-3 regions from 2012-2020. Our theoretical framework combines two approaches stemming from evolutionary economic geography and social/local governance literature. We examine the regional factors that may enhance the setup of biogas units in France. Results suggest that 1) revealed technological advantage in biotech and waste management, as well as in agri-food, positively influences the creation of biogas plants; 2) socio-economic and geographic factors also contribute to their development; and 3) different factors influence differently rural and urban biogas units’ creation.
